The Last Ice: Stage 2

by Aug 30, 2024News

The day starts at five o’clock in the morning, we start cycling at seven o’clock after preparations. Today’s goal is to reach the Tugtutoq fjord via the Niaqor-narssuaq area. The long-term goal is to reach the Qualeraliq glacier, one of the two largest glacier fronts in the region. We are behind schedule, so we want to cut two days off through a dirt pass we have identified. However, there is a dilemma: we don’t know if a narrow pass that is essential to reach the destination of Tugtutoq, planned for the afternoon, will be accessible, because if the water is not low, we won’t be able to cross it. If it is not possible to cross it, we will have to improvise the night somewhere, putting us further behind schedule.
At the end of the day Albert’s communication team has been informed that it has taken them longer than expected to cross the pass, as they have to make a total of eight trips for the backpack and the bike of each of the four members of the expedition, and as we know Albert changes the pace a little due to the condition of his leg. They were able to move everything, but when they reached the strait, the wind was brutal and it was impossible to cross the canyon, because if there is a headwind and the tide rises, a current is generated that is deadly for the lightness of a kayak or a water bike, as they go straight into the rocks. Therefore, they have had to camp on the land pass. We will report on tomorrow.
