Life’s Ice
Welcome to a very special adventure, environmental and awareness raising project where the epic of polar exploration will be at the service of reporting on the effects of climate change, pollution and polar ice retreat. On the next expedition, a team of 4 adventurers with extensive experience in extreme projects will travel the southwest coast of Greenland in total autonomy, using water bikes specially prepared to withstand the extreme conditions and carry all the necessary luggage.
The Life’s Ice
EXPLORING THE SOUTHWEST COAST OF GREENLAND BY SEA BIKE.
LIFE’S ICE is an adventure framed within the project “The Last Ice”, focused on extreme expeditions, environmentally responsible and committed to sustainability and awareness of the effects of climate change, pollution and the retreat of polar ice.
Launched in 2017, each “The Last Ice” expedition has a sense of inspiration and environmental outreach, through the epic story that emerges from the adventure. We have travelled across the steppes and frozen lakes of Russia, crossed lakes on indigenous reserves in Canada to document the change of millennia-old customs as a result of global warming, or crossed the Baltic Sea in extremely difficult conditions due to the thickness of the ice…
In this challenge, a team of 4 adventurers with extensive expedition experience will make the first sea bike crossing of the extreme southwest coast of Greenland.
We will make the first sea bike crossing of Greenland, starting from the small town of Quaqortoq, in the direction of Aappilattoq (a small town located at the southern tip of the island).
A north-south crossing of approximately 250 kilometres across icebergs, fjords and blocks of ice in the open sea, circumnavigating the virgin and extreme coast of Greenland, and in total autonomy, with an unprecedented and totally sustainable means of transport.
It will be the first polar expedition in the world to be carried out with this type of transport. There may be some confusion with a similar activity carried out recently, but which was not an expedition, but only an active tourism activity with water bikes in a polar area, making sporadic departures from a boat when conditions were optimal. Because of the complexity and risk of our adventure, and out of respect for our passion and the commitment of all the adventurers present and historical, we are obliged to qualify the difference between a real adventure, and an active tourism activity in totally controlled conditions, however well filmed or photographed.
Our mission
EXPLORE THE PRESENT TO CREATE A BETTER FUTURE
Taking advantage of the exploration in remote places of our planet, we collaborate with different institutions and universities in different projects. In addition, this expedition will give rise to a documentary of the highest level, directed by the prestigious film producer and director Miguel Ángel Tobías.
We will provide an exciting, transversal, realistic and optimistic vision of commitment to reach all types of audiences, with three fundamental axes:
- The adventure: it will be the epic, romantic story that will allow us to reach all audiences.
- Communication: the means to disseminate and connect with the values and reputation of the sponsors.
- Sustainability: will be the common thread and the true final purpose of the project.
From August 20 to September 6
4 adventurers will travel the southwest coast of Greenland in total autonomy by water bike, a fully sustainable transport that allows the necessary carrying capacity for an extreme expedition.
Albert Bosch
Albert is a character with a long career as an adventurer, entrepreneur, and writer.
Among many other adventures, he has crossed Antarctica unassisted from the coast to the South Pole (1,152km), completed the ‘7 Summits’ project (climbing the highest mountains of each continent, with Everest as the final point), participated in 9 Dakars (2 on motorcycle and 7 in car), where in 2015 he became the first driver in history to participate with a gasoline-free car (100% electric). He is a regular ultramarathon runner and has completed over 100 races or challenges in various extreme sports disciplines.
Both in adventure and in entrepreneurship, he remains committed to strong sustainability values.
He is a recognized speaker and writer on leadership attitudes, with six books published.
He likes challenges, preparing thoroughly to face them, and organizing the project to achieve the best result both from the sports challenge and on a professional or personal level, as well as in terms of the social and environmental impact they entail.
Pepe Ivars
Pepe is a complete adventurer and athlete in various mountain disciplines: climbing, skiing, ultra trails, MTB raids, FatBike and expeditions—a true all-rounder! You might find him in a Marathon des Sables or competing in arctic FatBike races.
Over the last 25 years, he has balanced his role as an executive at a multinational financial company in London with mountains and all kinds of adventures. He has participated in several expeditions in Pakistan, Russia, or Nepal. In 2015, he was one of the few climbers to solo ascend Ama Dablam that season.
Pepe is an environmentally conscious climber who actively collaborates with private companies, NGOs, and governmental institutions on collective awareness projects about the impact of climate change in polar regions. He holds the Mountain Leader Award from the British college, is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, and a member of the renowned British Alpine Club.
David Espallargas
David is a complete athlete based in Barcelona with many years of experience in varied disciplines such as mountain racing, trails, ultras, MTB, FatBike, climbing,… in deserts, mountains, and polar areas.
Active since 1988, he started with mountain biking and combines it with a notable alpinist resume, with summits like Aconcagua and Kilimanjaro. As a runner, he participates in long-distance and ultra-distance races on asphalt and mountain, including the epic Marathon des Sables.
But his natural environment is the bicycle, in which he has participated in numerous races like the Cape Epic (South Africa), Titan Desert (Morocco), Rovaniemi 150 (Finland), and polar expeditions on bicycles, like Lake Baikal in Siberia.
Miguel Ángel Tobías
Adventurer and lover of extreme sports. Two passions that have helped him in his career as a documentarian to create and face unique and risky projects. As an athlete, he has competed in jet ski races, descended canyons, climbed mountains, explored and dived in caves. He practices skydiving, has completed an aerobatic course, and is a plane pilot.
His latest adventure was crossing the Atlantic on a sailboat with 11 strangers, with no experience in navigation, from which he filmed the documentary “ATLANTICO: NAVEGANTES DEL ALMA”.
I must say that I feel the vertigo of someone who faces something unknown without being a specialist in bicycles or extreme cold, having already once been on the brink of death in the Andes.
I want to undertake this adventure to send the message to the world that human beings can do more than we have been made to believe. That love, solidarity, and collaboration are what allow us to overcome difficulties. That coexistence among different people is possible and necessary. And that we have a planet that we must take care of and be aware of the consequences of not doing so.
